According to 9to5 site, they received an email exchange from a reader to Phil Schiller where the Apple Senior Vice President of Marketing gives his take on the small amount of scratches and chips that Black iPhone 5 users have experienced.

Anyway, tests of the iPhone 5 shows that the back of the black iPhone 5 scratches much easier than its glass-backed iPhone 4/4S predecessors but the aluminum back stands up to drops a lot better than the glass.
