iPhone 5 owners who are experiencing a little problem in readings from the Compass app should know that they are not the only ones as reports indicate that there is indeed the issue of inaccurate sensors on the handset.

The users are reporting that the inclinometers and compass on the iPhone 5s handsets are off track by a good margin. The inclinometer is off track by 8 to 10 degrees, while the compass is off track by 2 degrees.

And according to a report from Gizmodo:

“Since the iPhone 5S landed in the hands of new owners a few weeks ago, there have been reports that on-board sensors like the gyroscope, compass, and accelerometer haven’t been working properly on some devices. We’ve confirmed the new iPhone’s failings on our own. It’s not just off. It’s embarrassing.

We tested two iPhone 5S units running the latest version of iOS 7 against the iPhone 5, as well as against real-world measuring tools to find out if the new iPhone’s sensors are off, and if they are, by how much. In most cases, we used the iPhone’s built-in iOS 7 apps for measurements, working under the assumption that Apple would properly calibrate its hardware to work with the software of its own design. We were wrong.”

MacRumors further point to a thread filled with complains on the similar issue. Moreover, threats have also been created for level and compass complains on Apple’s support site.

If this turns out to be a software issue, Apple can easily fix it in an iOS firmware update, but hardware issue may be difficult. Perhaps an iPhone 5s recall?

Whatever the case, this is a significant problem as the accelerometer and sensors are used by several apps on installed on the device.

Do you have an iPhone 5s? Have you heard about this issue?
