According to AllThingsD, Apple will be holding the iPad event of this fall after weeks from now, on October 22. The event will be focused on iPad but MacBook Pro and OS Mavericks will take part from this event.

The report says:

People familiar with Apple’s plans tell AllThingsD that the company will hold its next invitation-only event on Tuesday October 22. The focal point of the gathering will the latest updates to the company’s iPad line, but new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks will likely get some stage time as well, I’m told.

The well-known Jim Dalrymple of The Loop confirmed the report from AllThingsD by throwing his usual “Yep” to confirm reports. Dalrymple is considered the unofficial Apple mouthpiece on the web.
Also by mathematics, John Gruber says that the iPad event will be on October 22:

Last year:
iPhone 5 event: Tuesday 11 Sep.
iPad event: Tuesday 23 Oct.

This year:
iPhone 5S/5C event: Tuesday 10 Sep.
iPad event: duh

About the place of the event:

Sources declined to specify where the event is to be held, and I’ve not been able to confirm a location. My understanding is that it will not be held at the California Theatre in San Jose, the site of the iPad mini’s unveiling in 2012. That leaves Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium in Cupertino and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco as the two most likely locations.

Apple should be announcing iPad 5 with Touch ID, iPad mini s, iPad mini c, and more. The iPad 5 is rumored to run an improved version of the iPhone 5s’s A7 chip, the A7X, which is faster and more reliable.
About the software, there have been rumors about the iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 code-named Syrah. So that’s the perfect time for Apple to announce the release date of OS Mavericks and may announce iOS 8 beta?
