In its entirety, the Galaxy S5 is pretty similar to Galaxy S4, but the front now features 5.1 HD AMOLED panel, which stays at the same resolution of 1080p. It has dotted plastic design at the back which gives it a better feel, and the overall weight is 145 grams – making the device light to use.
The back of the device has a 16 megapixel camera, which can shoot 4k videos at 30 fps. Also, it can shoot HDR videos, and has a video stabilization feature. The camera package from Samsung will also include Selective Focus, Virtual Tour Shot and other new features.
The Galaxy S5 is IP67 certified, which means its dust and water resistant, and points out there won’t be an Active version this time around. Rest of the features includes Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0, IR blaster, NFC. The new one is Download Booster, which will increase download speeds by using cellular data + WiFi.
The hardware is quite appealing – 2.5 GHz quad-core processor and 2GB RAM. Android 4.4.2 Kit-Kat comes straight out of the box in terms of OS.
A heart rate monitor is also built in the device, underneath the camera lens on the back. It monitors your heart rate when you place a finger on top, and can be a great way to keep track for health enthusiasts.
And there’s also a fingerprint sensor, not as good as iPhone 5s though. It requires a gesture to unlock the device, and it’s in the Home button. A classic copy here?
Samsung Galaxy S5 will be available in Electric Blue, Copper Gold, Shimmery White and Charcoal Black at launch in 16 GB and 32 GB variants with a microSD option to expand till 64 GB. The battery is 2800m mAH – Samsung says the standby time will go to 390 hours and talk time to 21 hours.
Release date and handset price: Samsung remained tight lipped on the price, but we expect it around the standard $650. As for the release date, the Galaxy S5 and Gear 2 and Gear Fit will launch in more than 150 countries on April 11th.
