It was previously thought that 2014 will be the year of two new iPhones, until a report revealed that there are production issues with the 5.5-inch model and only the 4.7-inch model is expected in September.

A new report originating from Japan backed this claim. The mass production of the 4.7-inch iPhone is expected to start in July. The 5.5-inch production is scheduled for mass production in September, meaning Apple may not release the iPhablet before the holiday quarter.

The report was cited by G for Games and originally published by Japan-based blog EMSOne, citing supply chain sources saying two iPhone models will be released at different times in this year. The story is based on the Industrial and Commercial Times report, one of the biggest Taiwanese newspapers.

Apple typically waits for the technology to be ready rather than rush towards releases with compromise on quality. Tim Cook acknowledged bigger iPhones this year:

What we’ve said is that until the technology is ready, we don’t want to cross that line. That doesn’t say we’ll never do it.
We want to give our customers what’s right in all respects – not just the size but in the resolution, in the clarity, in the contrast, in the reliability.

There are many different parameters to measure a display and we care about all those, because we know that’s the window to the software.

The Reuters report associated delayed 5.5-inch production to manufacturing issues pertaining to in-cell production technology for the bigger displays. In-cell screens were initially integrated in iPhone 5 back in 2012.

Nikkei says that supplies have started making components for new iPhones, such as chips for liquid-crystal drivers and Touch ID sensors. LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display are said to be working on 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens, with Japan Display starting in May, and others in June.
