Touch ID now accessible by developers with iOS 8

Along with a slew of other features, Apple has today announced that Touch ID will now be accessible by developers for use in third-party applications. Previously, only Apple-made apps could access this feature, but many apps such as mint.com were demoed taking advantage of this quick-authentication hardware.
