In late October, DisplayMate ran a series of tests for the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, Apple’s newest tablets to hit the market. While the tests revealed that the anti-reflective coating on the iPad Air 2 was a great addition, it was still lacking in many areas. And, worse, the iPad mini 3’s display was noted for being a “major disappointment.†Now, several weeks later, DisplayMate has run a detailed color accuracy test on the six best mobile displays it has tested this year, including the iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 Plus, with varying results.
Apple’s newest iPads were able to rank pretty high in some specific categories, when it was all said and done the test showed that both the iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 Plus’s displays are simply not up to snuff when compared to some of the competition. Namely, Samsung and Microsoft. The test included Apple’s aforementioned products, plus Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5, and Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3.
“Its seems likely that Apple has concentrated on the important Red to Green part of the Color Space, which includes both the Skin Tone and Organic Colors. On the other hand, both the iPhone 6 Plus and iPad Air 2 are in last place for the Full Gamut Color Accuracy. This is partly the result of an over saturated Blue primary that distorts almost the entire Blue Region, which accounts for about half of the half of the entire Color Space and increases the Average Color Error, and also partly due to the less accurate bluish White Point.“
The test included five distinct categories: Full Gamut Color Accuracy, Skin Tone Color Accuracy, Organic Color Accuracy, Blue Region Color Accuracy and White Point Color Accuracy. Of note, Apple’s devices were able to achieve the highest scores within the Organic Color Accuracy and Skin Tone Color Accuracy categories. However, the devices came in last place for the best overall color accuracy, behind Samsung and Microsoft.
