The company did not name Apple, in line with its policy of not identifying clients. A person familiar with the matter said Apple would also invest an unspecified amount in the plant, which would further the Japanese screen maker’s aim of becoming the primary supplier of high-tech screens for iPhones.
While investment details are still confidential, the plant will be built in Ishikawa, central Japan for a cost of about 170 billion yen. Japan Display hopes to start operations in 2016 and notes that the plant will increase its LCD capacity by 20%.
If this type of deal sounds familiar, it’s because it is. Last year, Apple struck a deal with GT Advanced Technologies to build a factory for sapphire crystal iPhone 6 displays, until the deal famously and drastically fell apart.
