Apple has confirmed the acquisition to the Wall Street Journal via its standard boilerplate. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,†said an Apple spokesman.
The report was recently published by CNBC, and states that Apple has acquired the camera technology firm LinX, which is located in Israel. According to the report, Apple’s latest acquisition cost somewhere in the range of $20 million:
“Apple buys Israeli camera technology company LinX; discussions has been for deal around $20M, sources tell Dow Jones.“
LinX, for what it’s worth, has a specialization in “miniature multi-aperture cameras designed for mobile devices.†Why Apple acquired LinX would appear to be to better the camera technology within its mobile products, including the iPhone and iPad. That means that Apple could potentially use the technology that LinX has developed, which includes trying to achieve SLR-level quality photos from a mobile device.
“The engineers at LinX have solved all problems associated with combining multiple images captured from different points in space such as registration errors and occlusion related artifacts which are seen on competing technologies,†according to a LinX press release last year.
