Apple, today, has announced its cheapest 9.7-inch iPad model. The company is calling it simply the iPad and has priced it at $329 which makes it the cheapest iPad model company has launched to date. This new 9.7-inch iPad is meant to replace the aging iPad Air 2 under company’s tablet lineup.
In order to achieve a lower price point, Apple has opted for the older hardware for its new iPad. This new 9.7-inch iPad come with the same Retina display as its predecessor and is powered by an A9 chip. The display on this new iPad is brighter than the iPad Air 2 and unlike the iPad Pro lineup, it does not support Apple Pencil or feature a Smart Connector.
“iPad is the world’s most popular tablet. Customers love the large, 9.7-inch display for everything from watching TV and movies, to surfing the web, making FaceTime calls, and enjoying photos, and now it is even more affordable,†said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “New customers and anyone looking to upgrade will love this new iPad for use at home, in school, and for work, with its gorgeous Retina display, our powerful A9 chip, and access to the more than 1.3 million apps designed specifically for it.â€
As far as rest of the specs are concerned, the new iPad has nothing new to offer. Most of the specs remain same as the iPad Air 2: Touch ID, 10-hour battery life, 8MP rear camera, 1.2MP FaceTime camera on the front, up to 128GB of internal storage, and Wi-Fi ac/LTE configurations. Apple, however, has added some bulk and thickness to the new 9.7-inch iPad as compared to the iPad Air 2.
There are no quad stereo speakers in the new iPad. The new iPad model will be available in Silver, Space Gray and the gold color. And Apple has added a little surprise in the form of a white Apple logo on all the models.
Apple is going to launch the new 9.7-inch iPad in the US market on Friday, March 24. The Wi-Fi variant will start at $329 while the Wi-Fi + LTE model will start at $459. Following the release in the US, the new iPad will also be launched in 20 other countries from April.
