Apple’s upcoming 10th anniversary iPhone Edition, widely called the iPhone 8, is rumored to get OLED display. A new report for Nikkei claims that Apple has placed an order of 70 million OLED panels for the iPhone 8, with Samsung, which will be launched later this year.
An order of 70 million units for the iPhone 8 clearly shows how confident Apple is about the demand for its OLED iPhone variant which will highly likely get a premium price tag. It’s worth noting that any iPhonethat the fruit company has launched to date features an LCD display. Apple’s competitors, especially Samsung, has long been switched to OLED displays for its flagship devices.
The order figure is in-line with previous reports that suggested Samsung will be responsible for supplying a majority of the OLED displays with a number of units around 70 million. The report adds that the Korean company will be the sole supplier for the OLED panels this year, with more suppliers joining Apple’s vendor list in the coming year.
Apple has placed orders for bendable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels with Samsung Electronics for use in 70 million handsets this year, sources told Nikkei Asian Review. The large order suggests that Apple expects its new premium iPhone 8 to be launched late 2017 to fly off the shelves.
Please note that an order of 70 million OLED display panels for iPhone 8 does not mean that Apple will be shipping 70 million iPhone 8 into the market. Some of the stock of these OLED panels will be used in the iPhone 8 units sold early next year.
The report further adds that all the 3 iPhone variants that Apple will be launching this year, will feature wireless charging, waterproofing, and dust resistance. Apple’s suppliers, however, are still working on troubleshooting the overheating issue with the new devices. The report further goes on to say that one of these three new iPhone models will lack a physical home button and will feature a 3D sensor for facial recognition.
