Finally, we have a very first look at a supposed leak of ‘real’ iPhone 8 technical schematics allegedly showing the rear and front of Apple’s 10th-anniversary edition of iPhone. The image that was posted on Weibo today claims to give us a look at technical drawings of Apple’s next-generation iPhone. The drawings are said to be leaked straight from Apple’s major supply chain partner, the Foxconn.
The leaked schematics show an iPhone 8 with the minimal bezel on the left and the right sides of the screen. Even the top and the bottom bezels are pretty smaller when compared to the current iPhone 7.
Turning toward the back side, the images reveals that the dual lens camera setup and the rear flashlight are vertically stacked in the top-left corner of the device. The Touch ID can also bee seen on the back side right below the Apple logo and despite have a significantly larger display, the dimensions are comparable to the current 4.7-inch iPhone 7 model.
A look at the table reveals that the leaked image is supposed to be for the iPhone8’s Engineering Validation Test third revision. It is worth noting that EVT is an early stage in the Apple’s product development cycle. After this stage, the device will have to go through Design Validation Test and finally through the Production Validation test stage to reach into its final form.
Given the stage of these schematics, all the design choices shown in this allegedly leaked image are not locked down. Touch ID feature of the iPhone 8 has so far been one of the most discussed topics and Apple seems to try different options and location for the fingerprint reader. The majority of the rumors and reports believe that the Touch ID is going to be placed beneath the display.
Yesterday, a report from Cowen and Company’s analyst suggested that the integration of Touch ID beneath the display is one of the biggest bottlenecks for the iPhone 8 production. The analyst also suggested that if the company could not achieve highly scale production for these display panel, it will switch to a backup plan of putting the fingerprint sensor on the back of the device. This EVT03 seems to be that fallback design, ready in reserve.
The schematic drawing also adds weight to a claim from KGI securities analyst who notes that the iPhone 8 would be about the same size as the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 while featuring a huge 5.8-inch OLED display. Thanks to the minimal bezels.
Apple is widely expected to launch three new iPhone models later this year, two of which are going to be iterative ‘S’ upgrades with the same design of an iPhone 7 and one major new iPhone model. This new iPhone is what is pictured in the leaked drawings. It is rumored to be called ‘iPhone 8’ or ‘iPhone Edition’ or ‘iPhone X’ or the ‘iPhone Pro’. The rumored features include facial recognition, long-range wireless charging, 3GB of RAM, an all-new design, and an OLED display with 521 PPI density.
