At its educational event held this morning in New York City, Microsoft unveiled Surface Laptop, its $999 MacBook rival available for preorder beginning today ahead of its planned release this summer.

Featuring a 13.5-inch 1080p PixelSense display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, the Surface Book is only 9.9mm thin at the front and 14.47mm thick at the rear. This makes it thinner than the MacBook Air, and it is slightly lighter as well at 2.76 pounds (vs 2.96 pounds). The display features 3.4 million pixels and Microsoft says that it is the “thinnest LDC touch model” ever used in a laptop. As a bonus, the display is also compatible with Surface Pen, though it does not ship with the laptop itself.

The Surface Laptop will be available in a variety of configurations ranging from Intel’s 7th generation Core i5 to i7 processors. Microsoft rates the battery life of the laptop at 14.5 hours thanks to Intel’s ultra-efficient processor and the use of Windows 10 S.

Here’s a reveal ad:

That’s “up to four more hours of battery power than a 13-inch MacBook Pro” and “more battery life than any MacBook Air on the market today,” says the Windows maker in another comparison between its new notebook and Apple’s MacBook line. The Windows maker claims you can watch as many as fourteen episodes of your favorite TV show in one sitting, without ever plugging in.

The device’s keyboard has a 1.5mm travel, with the backlit keys made from the same material used for premium Surface Pro covers, called Alcantara fabric. The speakers are integrated underneath the keyboard, but there are no speaker grills or holes.

The base model of the Surface Laptop will feature a Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM, and 128GB SSD and will only cost $999. The laptop will be available in four colors: Platinum, Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, and Graphite Gold. Pre-orders for the Surface Laptop start from today, with shipments starting on June 15th.
