Apple has finally introduced its latest and 10th anniversary iPhone X model. In case you don’t know, the iPhone X is pronounced as “iPhone ten.” Like many previous iPhone models, the rumours mill had successfully leaked almost every bit of information related to iPhone X before its official unveiling. However, when it comes to presenting a product, there’s no second to Apple. The company still managed to blow people away with what they already knew through leaks.
Yes, the iPhone X is all about its display that covers its whole front with no Home button and Touch ID. Apple has opted for Face ID (facial scanner) that replaced the Touch ID authentication. The front and back are made of glass with a polished stainless steel frame. We also knew that the device will be powered by Apple A11 chipset, will come with more storage and RAM, and the exciting new augmented reality feature.
Despite knowing everything about the iPhone X before hand, the way Apple presented its new hardware at Steve Jobs Theater, it still felt just like a product that is completely foreign to the audience. Apple’s 10th-anniversary iPhone is by far the most exciting and daring iPhone the company has launched to date.
In this post, we are going to talk about the ten best new features of iPhone X. While the iPhone X comes with many exciting new features, but here are the top 10 best iPhone X features.
Revamped Design
iPhone X is the first iPhone in which Apple has shifted away from the tradition iPhone design. On the front side, the iPhone X is all screen with an infamous notch cut at the top end of the front. Apple has completely removed the Home button and along with it the Touch ID from iPhone X. There is no chin area on it.
The edges of the display are rounded instead of being squarish. The back of the handset of covered with glass and there is a stain less steel frame sandwiched between the front and back glass.
Super Retina Display
iPhone X is the first Apple handset launched with an OLED display. It is a 5.8-inch display with 2436 × 1125 pixels resolution and 458ppi density. The display has a 1,000,000:1 colour ratio and supports True Tone technology. With the True Tone tech, the display is capable of changing the colour temperature of the screen depending on the lighting in the surrounding.
The iPhone X display also supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. So we can expect an incredible experience while watching the movies and media mastered in HDR. Apple calls this display on the iPhone X as the “Super Retina Display.”
A11 Bionic Chipset
iPhone X features an all-new A11 Bionic chipset. The A 11 Bionic chipset comprises of 6-cores. Two of these cores high-performance ones and the other four are high-efficiency ones. The performance-cores are 25% faster than the A10 Fusion while the efficiency-cores are 70% more efficient than the predecessor. In A11 Bionic, Apple has integrated its own GPU. The GPU comprises of 3 cores which are 30% faster than the GPU inside the A10 Fusion.
Face ID
Apple has completely removed Touch ID from the iPhone X. Now you can unlock your device or make an Apple Pay payment just by looking at your iPhone X. Thanks to the True Depth camera system on the front. The whole Face ID system is powered by a new Neural Engine inside the A11 Bionic chip.
On the front side, Apple has added an all-new Face ID sensor that scans your face for authentication purposes. The True Depth area where the Face ID lies, also contains dot projector and an IR camera. The Face ID makes use of all these in combination with a flood illuminator to authenticate your face.
The dot projector spreads and matches 30,000 dots on your face. The Face ID is intelligent enough that it keeps learning about your face. It means changing your hair style or even growing a beard won’t fool Face ID. The system is so secure that you cannot fool it with photos and even 3D masks. The Face ID only works when you are attentively looking at your device. The Face ID also works in pitch dark, thanks to the IR camera.
Portrait Lighting
Along with the excellent Portrait mode, Apple has added Portrait Lighting to the rear and front camera of iPhone X. The Portrait Lighting allows you to add lighting effects to your Portrait mode shots. With the help of A11 chip, the new Portrait Lighting mode scans the background in real time. After that, it isolates the background from the subject. Then you can apply different lighting effects to your portrait and even turn the whole background dark without affecting the subject. The same feature is available on the selfie camera as well.
Portrait Mode Selfies
Apple introduced the Portrait mode with iPhone 7 Plus which turned out to be a huge success. The same Portrait mode with some enhancements is now available for the front-facing camera that will take the selfie game to a whole new level. While the front camera on iPhone X is still 7MP, but it now makes use of True Depth System inside the notch area. Now the selfies not only gets the Portrait mode treatment but also gets depth effect and the Portrait Lightning.
Animoji
Apple has introduced an improved animated emoji system in iPhone X. The Animojis make use of True Depth camera system to mirror your expressions and movements. These are available inside the Messages app. Just hold your phone up to your face and whatever expression you make will be transcribed to an animated emoji. There are some built-in Animoji characters such as panda, robot, unicorn, and even poop emoji.
Wireless Charging
The iPhone X features a glass back and the reason (other than design change) is to support wireless charging. To our surprise, Apple is using Qi industry standard in its 2017 iPhones. The iPhone X should support any Qi wireless charger out of the box.
Apple is also working on its own wireless charging base that will work with iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods at the same time. Apple is calling it AirPower. Apple charging pad won’t’ be launched until next year.
Battery Life
Apple iPhone X will provide 2 hours more battery life than the iPhone 7, thanks to an OLED display and an efficient A11 Bionic chipset. The handset also supports fast wired charging that can charge your phone up to 50% in 30 minutes. The only down side is that you’ll have to buy a fast charger as a separate accessory that will set you back $49.
Gestures Based Interface
Apple has completely removed the Home button from iPhone X. Instead, there is a bar at the bottom of the display. A simple swipe up from the bottom of the screen will either unlock the device or take you back to the Home screen. Â Want to go to App Switcher? simply swipe up and hold for a fraction of a second. Double pressing the side button will invoke Siri. The same can be used to authorize Apple Pay payments.
Swiping down on the right on the status bar will bring up the Control Center. Swiping down on the left of the status bar will bring up the Notification Center/Lock screen. To access the search, swipe down in the middle of the Home screen.
