Apple has succeeded in lowering the manufacturing cost of 2018 iPhone X models by a significant margin when compared to the current iPhone X handset, reports DigiTimes. The analyst Luke Lin of the DigiTimes has reported this based on the upstream supply chain information of Apple. The information he received states that the Manufacturing Bill of Material (MBOM) of upcoming 5.8-inch iPhone X is 10 percent lower than that of current iPhone X model. The BOM of 2017 iPhone X model was more than $400.
The report also states that Apple has finalized the screen sizes of three different iPhone models that the company intends to launch later this year. Two of these upcoming iPhone models are rumored to feature OLED displays measuring at 5.85-inch and 6.45-inch. The third model will feature a 6.1-inch LCD display.
While the previous rumors claimed that the 6.1-inch LCD model would be the cheapest of 2018 iPhone lineup, the DigiTimes report says otherwise. It claims that due to the decrease in manufacturing cost, Apple might end up pricing the smaller 5.8-inch model as the cheapest iPhone of the 2018 lineup. The report further adds that to keep the cost down, Apple had installed some lower spec’d components on the 5.85-inch iPhone X’s engineering unit as compared to the 6.1-inch LCD variant.
A previous report had claimed that Apple was working on featuring LCD display on the 5.85-inch iPhone X variant as well due to the high BOM associated with the OLED variant. The company has, however, entered an agreement with Samsung that will prevent any price increase in the OLED panels for Apple. This helped Apple in reducing the overall BOM for the upcoming 5.85-inch iPhone X model by 10 percent. This has lead towards the suspension of the 5.85-inch LCD variant that would now eventually be terminated.
Please take this report with a pinch of salt as the DigiTimes does not have an impeccable track record when it comes to predictions related to unreleased Apple products. However, there is one thing common is all the rumors and reports that Apple is working on three different iPhone models for 2018.
