Since its release, the Siri voice assistant on HomePod lacks Calendar support. A new evidence hints that this is going to change in upcoming final version of iOS 11.4 software update.
Currently, the Siri Personal Requests on Apple’s home speaker only work for Notes, Messages, and Reminders. This works for only one user and is associated with the iPhone that was used to setup the HomePod and on top of all this, both devices must be connected to the same WiFi network.
For comparison’s sake, Amazon’s Alexa has features iCloud Calendar interactions on Echo smart speakers even before the official unveiling of the HomePod. The fruit company seems to finally be catching up with the competition after a few months of HomePod’s availability by introducing a feature that should have been there from day one.
When a user sets up a HomePod for the first time, the step-by-step process prompts the user if they want to enable the Personal Requests feature. It also gives examples of apps that can be used with the feature. Until the second beta of iOS 11.4, the apps supported by the feature included Messages, Notes, and Reminders. However, after updating to iOS 11.4 beta 3, the setup process now shows Messages, Notes, Reminders, and Calander app as well.
While the description below the set of icons remains the same in pre and post beta 2 updates, this is still a pretty good indicator that Apple is going to add Calendar support in its Siri for HomePod making Personal Requests more useful to the users.
The support for Calendar requests for HomePod should be available with the release of iOS 11.4 final version and the associated firmware update for the HomePod to the general public. The feature cannot be tested at the moment as there is no developer or public beta available for the HomePod firmware, which should get its software update alongside the final version of iOS 11.4 software update.
