It was yesterday that the reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo called for a new iPhone model sporting a whopping 128 gigabytes of built-in storage – twice as much as today’s high-end 64GB iPhone 5 – and already a brand new SKU (Stock-Keeping Unit) reference has been spotted in a German retailer’s sales system.

German retail chain Media Markt has added a 128GB iPhone 5 model to its inventory, sparking speculation that Apple could be planning to double the handset’s maximum internal storage at its iPhone event on September 10. The iPhone 5 is currently available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB variants, but a 128GB model is sure to appeal to plenty of customers.

But it seems unlikely Apple would introduce a 128GB iPhone 5 and upgrade an existing product while unveiling its successor at the same time. Macerkopf.de, which first spotted the listing, suggests it could be a placeholder for the new instead, and that certainly seems more plausible.

Either way, we’ll have to wait until next month to find out. It’s unclear how Media Markt obtained information about upcoming Apple devices, so take this with a pinch of salt for now.

Apple notably pulled a similar move by quietly adding a 128GB iPad 4 variant to the lineup back in March.

If the rumors are true, Apple will announce the iPhone 5S upgrade and possibly a rumored plastic iPhone at the upcoming September 10 media event.
