Apple had last used a glass design on the iPhone with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s. While the iPhone 4 design had led to the widely popular ‘antennagate,’ the company did solve all such issues with the iPhone 4s.
It’s believed that Apple is looking to differentiate itself from competitors many of which are now using aluminum enclosures similar to the iPhone. Kuo doesn’t offer any details on exactly how Apple would create an all-glass iPhone. However, the analyst says that drop tests will not likely affect Apple’s decision, given that the iPhone 4 and 4S had a glass front and glass back with a steel band on the sides.
A previous report did also claim that Apple will be launching an iPhone with an all-glass design and a 5.8-inch AMOLED screen in 2017, and Kuo’s report today only adds further credence to them. Apple has reportedly already entered into a $2.6 billion deal with Samsung Display to supply 5.5-inch OLED panels beginning 2017.
It seems to me that the iPhone 7 — due to be unveiled later this year — will only offer minor upgrades and improvements over the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Apple has usually given the iPhone a huge design overhaul with every jump in version number, but if the leaks are anything to go by, the iPhone 7 will be more of an ‘s’ jump, with a waterproof design and lack of antenna bands at its rear likely being the key highlights. If true, it will surely not help Apple in reviving the dwindling sales of iPhones across the globe.
