Apple has officially revealed that they plan to unveil their next-generation flagship handsets, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ during an event at Mobile World Congress on February 25. Yes, these smartphones are going to be Samsung’s answer to Apple’s iPhone X.
Evan Blass, the well-known leaker who goes by the Twitter handle @evleaks, has shared several renders of alleged Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ that company plans on unveiling on February 25.
While these alleged Galaxy S9 and S9+ renders show that the upcoming Samsung flagship devices won’t feature a radically new design, they do seem to rock beautiful 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch edge-to-edge AMOLED displays. The bezels on both devices seem to be minimal in size as found in the current Galaxy S8 lineup.
The bezel at the top edge houses the camera and the microphone which means Samsung won’t follow Apple’s footprints with the notch design. With Galaxy S9+, Samsung seems to have taken the game one step further by making a screen-to-body ratio of 90% compared tot he 84% ratio on Galaxy S8+. If true, this would be very impressive of Samsung.
If we look at the invite sent by Samsung to the press, the tagline on the invitation suggests that these upcoming devices are going to have a reimagines camera setup. If rumors are to go by, the Galaxy S9+ will feature a vertically aligned dual camera system, just like the iPhone X. Both of these upcoming Samsung devices are rumored to feature the main cameras with the variable aperture with a mechanical adjustment between f/2.4 and smallest-in-class f/1.5 (would offer improvements in low light conditions). The second main camera of the S9+ will have a standard fixed aperture.
The devices are rumored to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in the US and China. The rest of the world will get Samsung’s own Exynos 9810 system-on-chip variant. The base model of Galaxy S8+ will have 128GB of internal storage and a 6GB of RAM module while the smaller S9 base model will feature 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. With so much better specs in the larger variant, it is going to be a difficult decision to opt for the smaller variant.
Samsung does not seem to offer Face ID-like authentication feature but will continue to feature an improved iris scanning, facial recognition, and a fingerprint sensor at the back of the device right below the camera sensor. The devices are expected to come in Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, Titanium Gray, and Coral Blue color options. They will be up for pre-order starting March 1st and will be shipped on March 16th.
