Another iOS 5 bug has arised. It`s not a fatal flaw but it`s still a violation of privacy and an annoyance. Canadian Tech consultant Ade Barakah has discovered an iOS 5 bug which allows photos on an iPhone to be viewed through the lockscreen camera button even if your passcode is on.

How does the bug work? Well, the viewable photos must have a timestamp newer to that of the iPhone `s internal clock. So, if you are one of those who keep changing their time zones, then you will feel the sting.

iOS 5 unlike previous firmwares allows you to quickly take a picture from the lock screen by double tapping the Home button. Afterwards, a small camera icon appears to the right of the “slide to unlock” bar. If your passcode is on, you will need to enter your 4-digit PIN to access the camera roll.

Let`s test this bug:

  • Set your iPhone`s date to some time in the past. Make sure your phone is locked.
  • Now access your camera roll from your phone lock screen. You`ll see every photo taken after your phone`s internal date.
Barakah points out that:

Apple should not rely on a simple time stamp to restrict image access . . . Changing the iPhone’s clock–[forward or backward]–should not affect its security. We can’t guarantee the clock will always monotonically [move] forward, and when it doesn’t, the system should fail-secure.

Well, like we said, it’s not exactly a fatal flaw, but who can live with the thought that anyone take take a sneak peek into his private photos?
