The smaller 8 inch iPad rumor is back. In case you forgot, several rumors of a mid-range segment smaller iPad have sprung over the past few months claiming that Apple is considering a smaller iPad to widen its market coverage in competition with Amazon`s Kindle Fire. The prices of the claimed-to-be-in-plan tablets will address the middle segment.

Today, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple`s 8 inch iPad is real. WSJ says that Apple is indeed considering an 8 inch iPad which will have the same resolution as the iPad2, and that the company is meeting with screen makers to test the panels.

“Officials at some of Apple’s suppliers, who declined to be named, said the Cupertino, Calif.-based company has shown them screen designs for a new device with a screen size of around 8-inches, and said it is qualifying suppliers for it. Apple’s latest tablet, the iPad 2, comes with a 9.7-inch screen. It was launched last year.

One person said the smaller device will have a similar resolution screen as the iPad 2. Apple is working with screen makers including Taiwan-based AU Optronics CO. and LG Display Co. of South Korea to supply the test panels, the person said.”

The report adds that Apple is working with designers to test panels all the time and it might not go forward with the device after all.

As you know Apple is preparing for an early March, more like March 7th, iPad 3 launch. The device is rumored to feature a Retina display, a quad-core processor and 4G LTE network. A mini iPad would allow for Apple to dominate the market.

We can’t tell which way Apple will go considering that Steve Jobs once tunred down the notion of a smaller iPad claiming that smaller iPads were difficult to use.

Which way do you think Apple would go?
